Posted by akela in : Cubs , trackback

6 cubs and 3 leaders visited the World Scout Jamboree on Monday.

We travelled by coach on the long journey to Essex and had a day expereincing what a Scout does at teh jamboree.

We had the privalege of visiting one of our Units 007 site on their sub camp (we were told these were out of bounds) unfortunaly Timmy nor Guy were there but we were made very welcome. their staff showed the cubs how they lived togehter as a unit during their stay at the Jamboree.

Our visit included a Show in the main arena which was Vast, we met many people we knew – Pete Sitford who was a cub leader until last year with us, and ex members of the group which was nice.

Cubs also met Scouts from, USA, HONG KONG, UK, MEXICO, TURKEY, VENEZUELA and many others from around the world.

Cubs swapped woggles, neckercheifs and group information so we hope to have a few new contacts throughout the world to keep in touch with and share our scouting Experiences.

It is an adventure i have never had and these cubs are lucky to have had this opportunity to see how 40,000 scouts from worldwide can join together and have a great deal of fun and adventure.

I went to the jamboree on Tuesday with my mom and sisters and really enjoyed meeting all the people from all the different countries. Everyone was so friendly and stopped to speak to us and ask us what country we were from. I was shocked how good everyones English was.

We met some Russians and some people from Thailand who gave us badges and a coin. They explained about their country and its climate changes and what they did as scouts.

We went in the food tents and tried food from Taiwan, Holland, Austria and Hungary. My favourite was the Hungarian chocolate bar.
We sat on the grass and watched a show where they were singing and dancing on a big stage.

My favourite part of the day was orienteering with the Ordnance Survey maps. We were given a page of photos of parts of objects hidden around the camp and had to find the code letter and the fastest party back won a prize. We came second and were only 2 minutes behind the winners.

The time went really quickly and there was so much more to do. We spent some time looking at the Global Development area where we learnt about poor children not being educated and we left messages on a board and signed our names on a brick. We learnt how a special grass in Thailand helped improve their soil to grow crops.

We watched a team building challenge, (crate stacking) and saw tents explaining the different religions of the world but we didn’t have time to go in them.

We went in the scout shop and bought some souvenirs and finally I had my photo taken with a wax work model of Lord Baden Powell.

It was a brilliant day and I wish I could have spent a few days there.
