Rea Away District Camp June 24, 2007
Posted by akela in : Cubs , comments closedWell we are two weeks away from what we hope will be a weekend never to forget. Planning for the event has been long and hard and the things that are on show for all the members will be fantastic. If they like the dare devil activities there’s plenty to do and if they don’t there’s even more gentler activities.
All members have been given a medical form please return it to your section leader immediately
The GROUP are asking for as many members / parents to help put camp up on the Wednesday 4th July from 7pm. This is a massive task for all putting up patrol tents, kitchen and dining tents, so the more hands we have the easier the process is completed.
St David’s will be camping in Lower Paddock Site, which will be called Gilwell Site for the weekend.

Sports day June 16, 2007
Posted by akela in : Cubs , comments closedWell done to all the cubs that attended sports day today. Almost the whole pack took part in races and events during the day. With both age sections finishing a very creditable 3rd place resulting in finishing 2nd overall in the whole competition which is superb. We congratulate Quinton on the double and watch out 2008 we’ll be back. ;-)
Thank you to the parents who gave up their afternoon on a very wet and wild day, fortunatly we had the use of the indoor sports hall.
Once again everyone thank you and well done – check out the photos in the cub summer 2007 album
bring a friend night June 13, 2007
Posted by akela in : Cubs , comments closed Well we had 4 friends come to our Bring a Friend night. They all seemed to have enjoyed the taster session.I think they enjoyed the badge biscuit designing and the marshmallow and breadstick making and cooking on open fires the best.
2 of the boys will join us at the pack from next week they enjoyed it so much.
Thank you to those cubs who brought a friend with them. If any other cubs wish to bring a friend at any other time let akela know
Home Hospitality June 11, 2007
Posted by akela in : Cubs , comments closedThe UK jamboree offers home hospitality to members of scouting from a round the world. Birmingham County have members of the Swiss contingent to home. Members are of scout age and are male and female. See below a letter from HQ. If anyone would be able to offer home hospitality or wants more info then contact me ASAP
Dear All
Please forgive me for sending out this email.
Although we have had some offers of help off members of our County we are now DESPERATE tofind another 6 families to offer home hospitality to a minimum of 2 young people each from the Swiss contingent – we also need some additional families in case of emergency.
The contingent will be arriving at Dover on the morning of Tuesday 24th July, so will be ready for collection late afternoon, early evening that day (probably from Hatchett Street) and will be picked up sometime during the morning of Friday 27th July (again probably Hatchett Street.)
Please can I ask you to pass this message far and wide within the County? If you think there is a family in your Scout Group/District that would be suitable PLEASE ask them to get in touch.
The young people from Switzerland do not need any “Special” treatment; they just need to experience typical British everyday life.
A spare bedroom for them to use would be great, but if you don’t have that, then mattresses on the floor or a camp bed will suffice.
Please, please do your best to help
Thanks
Sharon

District Commissioner’s report from Scout Camp June 1, 2007
Posted by akela in : Cubs , comments closed'Scout Camp Wales 2007'
I had the privilege of spending the day yesterday (Tuesday 29th May) with all on the ‘Bala Camp’
It was a brilliant day and the weather was just fantastic, we even had Auntie Barb rushing around
administering sun-cream !!!
When I arrived at just after 10.00 we had the flag break and after a quick cup of tea, then helped
Avon and Laura carry out the Scouts camping site morning inspection, with full ‘kit’ inspection (primarily
to find all the lost items from the last couple of days !!!)
After another cuppa the Scouts started on their camp ‘gadgets’ while Avon and Mike took me on a full
tour of the whole site. Upon our return some of the Leaders and myself started on the first of the
camps ‘pioneering’ projects – a “Monkey Bridge” - across the small river that runs down one edge of
the site. Breaking for a lunch of sandwiches and followed by fruit it was back to finish off the bridge
and then for everyone – and I mean everyone, Skip, Barbara, me, Laura all the scouts and other
Leaders spent a great couple of hours wobbling our way across this splendid bridge, with Mike and Dave
taking copious photos. It was time then for the Scouts in their 3 patrols to prepare their fires in readiness
for the evening meal, cooked in camp fire ovens of Roast Chicken. Mean while Kek, taking charge of
a ‘Dutch Oven’, cooked the most delicious piece of beef for the Leaders meal, with roast pots, mashed
pots, peas and carrots. The 3 patrols and the Leaders all eat at the same time, the scouts on their
sites and the Leaders in the mess tent. All was followed by brilliant ‘steamed puddings’ and custard,
which was prepared by all of the ‘ Scout Camp first timers’ and cooked by Barbara, we all sat and eat that
together. By now it was 19.30 and there was not an insignificant amount of washing and clearing up to
do, this was with good team work quickly done and then the final site inspection by Avon and myself.
A quick sit down a chat and another cuppa and then time for the Scouts to start their ‘Mini Olympics’
competition and for me (as it was 21.30 by now) to head off home.
I arrived home very tired but having had a most wonderful ‘Scouting’ day.
Many thanks to the Leaders and Scouts of St. David’s for allowing me to spend the day and for all
the wonderful food.
Keep up the true ‘Scouting’ way that St. D’s always do.

Cub Sports Day
Posted by akela in : Cubs , comments closedThe district cub sports day will be held on Saturday 16th June at 2pm at Shenley Court Sports Centre, which luckily for us is down the road.
We try and get as many cubs to take part even if they arent sporty and dont like the running races there is the Field events – Tug of war, throwing an cricket ball and standing jumps.
Tuesday’s cub meeting will see cubs having a practice at some of the events, to see which events the cubs would like to do for the competition.
The weather hopefully is going to be nice on Tuesday night
Cubs need to meet again on the playing fields on Shenley Lane.
If wet cubs will be in the hall.
Hope to see you all refreshed after the holidays.
